The Question of Fluoride

Today I’m heading out to the pediatric dentist for my almost-four-year old daughter’s check-up and cleaning. A few months ago when we went in, the dentist told us that our insurance didn’t cover fluoride treatments twice a year. I was a little unsure about how I felt about it, so I figured, why pay out of pocket for it? We skipped it and I vowed to do a little research before we went back.

The more I looked into fluoride, however, the more confused I got. As with many things, the research seems contradictory and some people are adamantly against it, while others sing its praises. Here’s a little bit of what I’ve learned about this naturally-occuring mineral.

Queen for a Day Giveaway 2011

This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for entering!

Welcome to Simple Living Media’s Queen for a Day Giveaway! Today we’ve got five giveaways full of treats to celebrate the mom in your life, just in time for Mother’s Day on May 8.

Here at Simple Organic, a lot of our readers are mamas so we tackle a lot of issues and topics that related to mothering and parenting within the natural living realm. And f you’re not a mother, because I know plenty of our readers are not, chances are you know someone who you could bless the socks off with the gifts from this great giveaway if you win.

I love the idea of pampering mom with little treats and sweet nothings that let her know how special she is. We can, of course, make her feel this way any day of the year, but Mother’s Day gives us the chance to make the day all about her and what she does for the family.

Happy Earth Day!

Today we celebrate a day set aside for raising awareness of environmental issues. This week we talked about making your Earth Day contributions last beyond today by helping plant trees, and also about turning off the TV.

Now I want to take you back to this time last year on Simple Organic when our former editor Katie Fox organized an amazing week of ideas and giveaways called Make Week.

Make Week was all about finding alternatives to TV, since that tends to be the default for many of us in our free time or when we need a break. Instead of succumbing to the TV out of boredom or just because it’s easy, Katie encouraged us to make life happen. I think this idea also extends beyond the screen debate to the way we live our lives in general.

Some of these ideas may not seem to have anything to do with Earth Day at first glance but as many of us are already making strides in our baby steps toward a more eco-friendly way of life, I wanted to think a little bit outside the box here.

So much of our culture and society promotes a lifestyle of consuming, but when we go back to nature and back to basics we realize that a lifestyle of making is much more fulfilling, not to mention more friendly to the Earth.

Let’s take a look at the inspiring collection of ideas Katie gave for making rather than just consuming.

Lessons Learned From Turning Off the TV

We’re right in the middle of Screen-Free Week and Megan already shared some great resources to help us with ideas and activities as alternatives to turning on our TVs and computers this week.

I think many of us can relate to resorting to entertaining our children with the TV and computer more often than we’d like.  I know I can.

After a long winter, and weeks of being sick, I realized that my kiddos were watching more TV on a regular basis than I really felt comfortable with, and so I declared “No TV Month” in March for our family. (This didn’t include my hubby and I in the evenings – it was March Madness, after all! It was more for the kids during the day).

We went cold turkey, going from at least an hour of TV per day to none.  It was hard for the first few days, but then it got much, much better.  [Read more...]
