Planting a Medicinal Herb Garden

Written by contributor Donielle Baker of Naturally Knocked Up

Over the last couple of years I’ve been using an increasing amount of herbs in my home. Not only for cooking, but also for making my own home remedies.

Preparing herbal remedies is a wonderful way to boost my families health and support our bodies when illness or injury happens. Krissa gave us her plans for growing herbs this year, and now I wanted to share with you my plans.

This summer season I’ll also be planting many of my own medicinal herbs. Being able to grow and harvest my own herbs will not only save me money, but will allow me (and my family) to experience herbal medicine at it’s best.

The Downside to Baby Sling-ing: My Shoulder Injury and Natural Anti-Inflammatory Treatment Plan

While I’ve owned and used several different strollers of the years, I’m definitely a babywearing mom, too.

Sadly, I’m currently not doing much babywearing though.  Instead of snuggling and nursing my baby while wearing her, I’m stuck nursing a sore shoulder. I’ve got some sort of strain/tendinitis/bursitis and it’s been causing quite a bit of pain lately, even without babywearing.

After seeing a holistic MD and a physical therapist though, I’m confident that I’ll be back at full strength and out of pain in the near future. When my doctor gave me two options: an immediate steroid shot or a longer path of holistic treatment, I obviously (knowing me) chose the second option.

So I wanted to share a little of my story, treatment and babywearing plan for the future.

Herb Gardening: My Favorite Herbs and Uses for Them

Written by contributor Krissa Jeldy of More Than Mundane

My dreams of having a full-on garden may not be a realistic option this year, but having a small herb garden is always a possibility. Choosing a few of your favorite and most used herbs to plant each year is something you can do no matter how limited your space.

I use pots on my back porch for a small herb garden, but you can also create an indoor herb garden if you don’t have any outdoor space at all. I love being able to walk out the back door and have a variety of fresh herbs available for my use, rather than having to buy those small bunches at the store for $2.00 or more every time I want some fresh herbs! Weekend Links {+ Allora Handmade Giveaway!}

The excitement of our rebranding definitely hasn’t worn off yet. Simple Homemade isn’t a whole new blog, but rather the evolution of what Simple Organic had already become, and yet, it also opens up the doors to so much more that we want to explore.

To read more about what we are about, please read our updated About page. And as a reader recently pointed out, I hadn’t updated my own bio page, and so I figured now was a good time to do that as well (check out my ears in the family photo there for a teeeeny sneak peak at today’s giveaway!). It will probably still take a bit of time before the the switch is ironed out (such as my Twitter handle changing over), so I thank you for your patience as we work through it all.

I have a few good links for you this weekend, and then a celebratory giveaway as we enter a new phase of blogging life here on Simple Homemade.

Giveaway

My friend Jess, from Allora Handmade (pictured in blue above) makes beautiful rosette accessories. She is such a sweetheart and I have loved getting to know her online and even meeting up with her in real life here and there.

I have a couple pairs of rosie earrings and every time I wear them I get compliments galore. And you can see Tsh wearing her gorgeous rosette necklace in the top photo of this post.

From Pinterest to Real Life: March 2012

By now, most of you have probably seen the excited rebranding around here… Simple Organic is now Simple Homemade! I’ll share a little more about this transition on Sunday but in the meantime, you can enjoy the same quality content, including today’s favorite linky!

If you want to be one of the first to know all about why Tsh and I decided to make the switch, you can give a listen to my recent appearance on her Home Fries podcast, The Simple Mom Podcast. I had a great time sitting down over a virtual cup of coffee to chat with her about Simple Homemade, cloth diapering, adoption, and more!

Now, it’s on to our regularly scheduled monthly tribute to taking our pins from the boards of Pinterest to real life!
