Day 9: Getting to know your sewing machine

Today is Day 9 of 31 Days of Sewing School.

Now that you’ve got your owner’s manual handy, you should be able to find a machine overview section towards the beginning.  This will show you all the parts of your machine.

I wish I could just show you how to thread your machine and use it, but unfortunately like our own needs, every machine is different. Your best bet is reading your owner’s guide and talking to your local sewing machine shop (take a class with them to learn your machine if you can!).

But what I can do is show you what the main parts are that most every machine will have.

UPDATE: This is a new video! Sorry about the technical difficulties. This one should be much better quality!

Is there a part of your sewing machine that you’re wondering about? Tomorrow, we’ll talk about needles, and how not to break them.

Thanks Nicole! Makes it a little less scary/intimidating if I go through with getting one. :)

Sorry that you had to redo the video, but thank you! Great basic overview. I think I’ll pull my machine out today!

Very nicely done. I’m almost not terrified of my machine anymore. ;D Of course, I now want one that beep. ;)

  5. Kelly says:

I was taught to turn the hand wheel toward me not away- does it vary by machine as well?
