Written by editor Nicole Bennett of Gidget Goes Home.

It’s sort of hard to believe that I’m writing this post, as it marks the end of an era for me– today I am officially saying farewell to Simple Homemade, as Tsh alluded to a few weeks ago on Simple Mom. While it saddens me to say goodbye, I am excited to see where the blogging road leads as the sun sets on this blog, and I continue the conversation on natural creativity and more over at my personal blog, Gidget Goes Home.

I started blogging in June of 2008, when I decided my green living soapbox posts didn’t belong on the family blog anymore. My parents wanted to see photos of their cute grandbaby, not read about natural sunscreen.

Almost immediately after I began, I stumbled upon a little blog called Simple Mom. I was a devoted reader and can recall sitting in front of my Google Reader during naptime just waiting for Tsh (then known as Toblerone) or one of the other few bloggers I followed to update their blog and offer me something new to read.

Fast forward a year and half later– Tsh expanded her blog to a network, birthed out a little family of blogs, and I came onboard under editor Katie Fox to be a contributor on a little blog called Simple Organic, what you now know as Simple Homemade. Still passionate about natural body care products, I wrote my first post on choosing safer personal care products.

Later that year, I was honored to take on the role of editor, when Katie decided stepping down would be best for her family. I stepped into a wonderful world of editing and writing with an amazing team of contributors, and an intimate group of co-mentors and friends in the other SLM editors.

It’s been a blogging dream come true, watching our community grow as we shared stories, research and tutorials, especially over the last year as we rebranded and transitioned be a more creative blog, while keeping the DNA of natural living.

I’ve learned more than I could have known and have loved interacting with you, dear readers, in the comments and through social media.

I hope you’ll join me as I journey forward as a wife, mom, and writer.

You’ll find me on a monthly basis over at Simple Mom, where I’ll be writing a sewing column– that’s where you’ll find our Simple Homemade archives eventually, too– and of course over at Gidget Goes Home.

Head there today for a delicious seasonal dessert recipe (if you know me, you can probably guess that it’s a homemade ice cream recipe!), and if you like what you see, I hope you’ll consider subscribing. Our monthly series, From Pinterest to Real Life will also live over there, starting next month. I’ll be officially relaunching the blog next week, with a beautiful, new design, and will be doing a big, fun giveaway to celebrate.

We have an abundance of lemons this time of year and one of the things I love to make is lemonade. Spring and summer just call for homemade lemonade in my opinion, because, really–what says “summer” more than drinking an ice cold glass of lemonade?

Traditionally, lemonade is made with white sugar, but I’m always looking for healthier sweeteners, and honey is perfect in this case, because it pairs so well with lemons. You may want to play with the amount of honey in the recipe and adjust it to your level of desired sweetness. I find that if I’m adding in a sweet fruit at the end, I don’t need as much honey.

This is my basic lemonade recipe with lots of ways to add in some fun variety as well.

Honey Sweetened Sparkling Lemonade

Ingredients

1 cup + 2 cups of water

3/4 cup honey

7-8 lemons (you will need 1 cup of lemon juice)

optional add-ins: ginger, lavender, rosemary, basil, mint, frozen fruit

club soda/sparkling water (optional)

Directions

1. Begin by making a simple syrup by heating 1 cup water with 1 cup honey on the stove. Bring to a low boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Add the peels from several lemons to your simple syrup while it simmers. This is also where you can add in your flavors, or you can stick with just the lemon peels for traditional lemonade. Other options for add-ins:

ginger (2 inch segment of fresh ginger, sliced)

lavender (1-2 Tbsp. dried lavender buds)

rosemary (2-3 sprigs)

basil

mint

thyme

sage

2. While your honey simple syrup simmers, juice your lemons. You want 1 cup of lemon juice.

3. Cool the honey simple syrup and strain the add-ins out.

4. Mix together the honey simple syrup, lemon juice, and 2 cups of cool water (or 3 cups if you’re not mixing with sparkling water).

5. Fill a glass 2/3 full with the lemonade and top off with some club soda/sparkling water. You can also add in fresh or frozen fruit at this point. I like strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, cherries or peaches. I also like watermelon, but blend it until it’s smooth before adding it to the lemonade.

Some Good Pairings

Basil + Strawberry

Mint + Cucumber

Lavender + Blueberry

Basil + Blackberry

Basil + Cucumber

Thyme + Peach

Sage + Blackberry

Rosemary + Peach

Mint + Strawberry

My most recent batch was mint with muddled strawberries, which both my daughter and my husband declared “the best lemonade ever.”

How do you like your lemonade? Classic, or with some fun flavors mixed in?

Written by editor Nicole Bennett of Gidget Goes Home.

You may remember back in December that one of the items that we gave away in our awesome Christmas giveaway was a complete set of the Lucky Penny fabric line, designed by the talented Alison Glass.

At the time, I showed you a few rice owls that I made with the fabric, which came out adorable, if I do say so myself. Well, with the fabric I had left (and a bit more that was bought) I had big plans.

Plans that it helps to have a very talented quilting mom to bring to life.

You see, in almost ten years of marriage (this June!), David and I have used a random assortment of handmedown or repurposed (i.e. designed for a smaller bed) quilts along with our beloved down comforter (or rather, my beloved down comforter, since I’m married to a human heater).

As we approach our tenth year of marriage, and after we recently became homeowners, I decided to coax my mom into making us our very own master bedroom quilt.

Read on to see more shots of my beautiful new quilt in progress.

As soon as I saw the Lucky Penny fabrics, I fell in love. I knew it was exactly what I wanted for my bedroom– a full spectrum of color, varied design, something that somehow reflects our fun life and marriage, yet also feels grown-up and modern.

My mom’s been sending me iPhone snapshots as she goes, asking my opinion on the block layout, the cornerstones (we chose the three above) and other options.

The pattern she’s using is called Tossed Nine Patch by Quilt in a Day. Luckily she has a big tile floor where she can lay out the blocks for such a big quilt (oversized queen).

This was the first view I got of the top– still missing its borders, but with the lattice and cornerstones between the blocks. I told her it was perfect how the pinkest blocks ended up up on my side of the bed.

Here’s a close-up of the borders. She did an assorted mix of squares after a skinny white border, and then a thick one with my favorite fabric. I matched the wall paint color in our bedroom to go with this large border background.

It still has to be quilted and bound but you can get the gist of the finished quilt top here. I just LOVE it. I’ve done a bit of quilting in my time, but I’m in a season where simpler, shorter projects fit into life better (so I opted to outsource). Plus, I love the idea of sleeping under an heirloom made with love by my mom.

My mom’s got mad quilting skills. Thanks, Mom!

Written by contributor Jess Collier of If Only They Would Nap.

My poor front door has been bare since Christmas.

I usually have a different wreath/decoration to go with each change of season or holiday. During the last trimester of my pregnancy, however, all seasonal decorating went out the window. But now I’ve been cooped up in the house a bit, with the recent arrival of baby number four, and there’s still no spring in sight in Wisconsin.

So a new spring wreath was in order! And one that I could make in thirty minutes or less (you know, before baby wakes up!).

Supplies:

pre-made wreath (you can find these at any craft store)

ribbon or lace

fabric or wool scraps

needle and thread

fabric glue

buttons

1. Wrap ribbon or lace around the wreath. Glue the ends on or tuck them into the wreath.

2. Cut strips of fabric. The length/width will depend on how big you want your flowers to be.

3. Fold strips in half.

4. Fold and twist the strip in a circle, layering the fabric as you go around. There is no “right” way to do this. Find a way that works for you. I made some that have more of the fraying edges showing and others that show more folded edges. Embrace the imperfections!

Using a needle and thread, tack down the layers as you go. When you reach the end of your fabric strip, sew through all the layers at the center, securing them together.

5. Before you tie off your thread, add a button.

6. To give the wreath a little different texture, add a couple of flowers in felted wool scraps. I used this method for making these flowers – it produces a little different result with wool vs. the knit fabric in the tutorial. But I really like how they look and what they add to the wreath.

7. Arrange the flowers onto a scrap piece of felted wool. Use fabric glue or a hot glue gun to secure the flowers. Then trim away any excess felt, so that no one will see it when you’re finished.

8. Glue the flower arrangement to your wreath and admire your handiwork.

I love how this wreath added a pop of spring to our front door – and it was an easy project to fit around a newborn’s unpredictable schedule!

How are you today?Do you decorate for the seasons? What spring decor projects are you working on?

The days are getting longer and (hopefully) warmer– it’s that time of year when we start itching to be outside more and more!

I recently fell in love with the idea of riding a cargo bike. What is that exactly? Well, it’s a bike that can carry not just one rider, but also a gaggle of kids and stuff, for riding around town. I think it would be such a fun way to get around– saving money, no emissions, exercising, enjoying the fresh air in my beach town…

I can’t afford one right now, but I can sure dream. I’m going to blame the fact that my husband himself works for a company that makes a unique bike. And while I’ve been thinking about it, I thought it would be fun to take some further inspiration from my bike dream.

Love the color of this new Xtracycle Edgerunner, wouldn’t I look styling, riding my kids around on this?!

Such a fun print! It definitely has the feel of the fun of riding bikes.

This has always been a favorite print of mine. When I ordered an embroidery pattern from Sarah Jane Studios, I received a thank you card with this bike print on it, and it’s been on my inspiration board ever since.
One of my favorite memories is my birthday a few years ago when my family (including some extended family) took our bikes down to Coronado (an island in San Diego) to ride around downtown. There’s just something about riding bikes by the beach…

Written by editor Nicole Bennett of Gidget Goes Home.

Ah, that mending pile. It seems to fall into the category of to-do items that contains things like Mary Poppins’ carpetbag… that is to say, it seems never-ending. There is always a button to sew back on, a strap to repair, a hole to patch. And if you like to repurpose and upcycle, then the options are endless as to what could end up in the pile.

So today, let’s take a tip-toe-ing baby step towards that pile and organize it a bit. I think that might help the tasks seem a little less daunting. Are you with me? I’ll use my own collection of things that need attention to guide us through this little experiment.

When we moved I whittled my mending pile down to things I actually and really want to fix, repair or tailor. Here are a few ways I’m determining what to work on when.

What to consider when prioritizing the mending pile

1. Size

Top priority will be mending items that belong to kids who will potentially outgrow said items soon if they don’t get fixed pronto. If I don’t really care about the item I will probably just give it away (I have to consider the worth of my time after all) but if it’s handmade or super cute, it’s naturally worth the time to fix.

These two dresses have been sitting here too long already (the handmade one on the right actually broke when my five-year old was wearing it, ahem), so they are taking first priority.

2. Simplicity

I like to get the easy jobs out of the way first so I feel like I’m making quicker progress through the pile. Sometimes this will take priority over even size if I’m really motivated– but a button on a a pajama top can wait a bit longer so I make sure to fix the dresses Hallee is on the verge of outgrowing.

But generally speaking, sewing on a button is one of the simplest and quickest mending jobs, and there’s really no excuse for its sitting in the mending pile for months on end, other than my own laziness.

3. Season

The next qualification I will probably look at is what season a particular item belongs to, or in other words, how soon do I need it fixed?

For me, these summery tops that need to be taken in/straps shortened need to be taken care of sooner than this fall-colored dress that needs a new zipper. I’ll use the nightie and tank top as soon as they’re fixed, whereas the thrifted dress can wait since I’m imagining it with boots anyway (it’d be cute in summer, too, if I get my act together, but it’s less pressing as you can see).

4. New skill required

Finally, do I need to learn a new skill to mend something? If so, it’s going to take last priority.

I’ve never replaced elastic on a swim diaper or gotten wax out of a vintage linen, so these projects will have to wait, since I’ll need to do some research and take a bit more time to figure the job out.

How’s your mending pile looking? How do you decide which jobs to tackle first?

I just got done celebrating my son’s third birthday this weekend– what fun! It’s great to see how enjoyable the simple things can be, a mommy/daddy date for cinnamon rolls and a simple party at the park with friends, family and ice cream were just the thing for our special three-year old.

And yesterday I got to sink my hands into some potting soil to repot a few plants and boy do I have the itch to do more gardening. We won’t be growing much of a garden this year but I can’t wait to at least get a few things in pots– some herbs, tomatoes and strawberries are what I have in mind, as soon as we finish our back patio.

A few things to share

I’m loving the recent series at Whipstitch about Deborah’s search to build an Audrey wardrobe. I’ve always been an Audrey fan, too, so I look forward to seeing what patterns Deborah finds that emulate Audrey’s style.

If you’re feeling charitable and want to spread a bit of love, there are a couple of new ways you can do that: one, is with Craft Hope, where right now for their twenty-first project, you can donate handmade blankets, hats and scarves which will be send to orphans in Romania.
I recently became an affiliate of Go To Patterns, and they have a really neat opportunity right now, too. If you purchase the Casual Lady pattern, a sweet and simple top and dress pattern, you will be helping fund a Sewing Collective in India for single mothers escaping the sex trade industry as well as a safe house for children in Cambodia at risk of being trafficked.

I love this DIY Leather Handle box over at WhimseyBox, it would be a great way to organize a few craft supplies.

If you need to sew something for a baby, look no further than Kate from See Kate Sew‘s awesome collection of 50+ baby sewing tutorials.

Written by editor Nicole Bennett of Gidget Goes Home.

Some pinners, it seems, have a love/hate relationship with Pinterest.

By love/hate, I mean that they love all the good ideas, but they hate the pressure to DO ALL THE THINGS that they find on Pinterest, and they then find themselves pinning lots of ideas, but actually doing next to none.

I saw this phenomenon early on, and created From Pinterest to Real Life to combat this tendency, and to encourage us to not only pin, but to also create.

I’ve struggled a lot with discontent in my time, but the truth is, I don’t really experience the hate part of the relationship with Pinterest myself. My bloggy friend Anne, at Modern Mrs. Darcy, wrote about this awhile back, explaining that some of us are just more likely to experience social comparison than others. I find that I can get Pinterest to serve me quite well, rather than me bowing down to it as an alter of discontent.

Here’s why I love Pinterest, and how it’s helped me organize my creative endeavors more than ever before.

While I would love to sit and scroll through my feed of my fellow pinners’ inspiring finds, it’s just not how I normally spend my free time. Usually, I’m in the kitchen these days, or maybe doing some writing or blog reading, or occasionally with my nose in a book or working my way through my ridiculous stack of unread magazines quietly calling my name.

So while I do occasionally repin something that catches my eye, here’s how I don’t generally use Pinterest: to surf through endless ideas for hours on end. (I would like to do this, but alas, I have to make dinner.)

For years, I saved magazines by the stack, pages dog-eared to rip out later, waiting to be filed in my overstuffed and underused binder of crafty inspiration. A simple white three-ring binder full of divided sections and clear plastic pockets where I could insert my magazine clippings.

Tutorials, quick tips, inspiring styles, color palettes, you name it. Sound familiar? Yep, it was the analog precursor to Pinterest, or what I now think of as my digital inspiration binder. The amazing thing about this digital inspiration binder? It goes wherever I go (or wherever your computer is if you don’t use Pinterest’s mobile apps), unlike that binder that’s still collecting dust in a closet somewhere.

Three ways I make Pinterest work for me

1. I primarily use Pinterest to archive ideas I’ve found elsewhere, whether that’s via a blog in my reader, a link a friend posts, or as I’ve mentioned before, from a magazine (I now read magazines with my Pinterest app open for easy searching/pinning/archiving).

2. One way to avoid letting Pinterest overwhelm you, is to take a break from the social aspect of it, and just make it work for you. Find ideas that inspire you elsewhere, and then catalog them on your boards. Find things you actually want/need to make/do/create rather than just grabbing other people’s finds for a time to get a renewed sense of your own creative focus.

3. Pins aren’t static; tell them where to go. One of the things I love about Pinterest is that I can move pins around. So after I make or do something, I move it to my made and did board. Once I’ve made a dinner recipe a few times and deemed it worthy of becoming a regular, I move it to my favorites board for easy locating. I also comment on my own pins with recipe notes if I make an adjustment when I’m cooking. Just like Dave Ramsey suggests I tell my money where to go, I tell my pins where to go, so I can find and use them easier.

Do you feel overwhelmed by Pinterest? How do you make it work for you?

Written by Melissa Camara Wilkins.

I am about to show you the easiest craft in the history of… ever.

I’m expecting a baby in a few weeks, and I’m at the point that “easiest ever” is exactly the right difficulty level for me!

(Okay, okay, that’s always the right difficulty level for me. Maybe you can relate?)

I think lace and whites are perfect for springtime, since they don’t compete with the greens and flowers that are starting to appear again.

Today we’re going to add white trim to repurposed jars to make something lovely.

Materials

Gathering materials will be the longest part of this project.

• Clear glass jars. Mine are culled from the recycling bin. (Here’s an easy way to remove the labels.) You could also use clear glass votive cups.

• White trim. I used ric rac and doily medallions, both from my fabric stash. Doily medallions (2-3” doilies) can be purchased on Etsy, or cut from the center of larger, thrifted doilies.

• Double-stick tape.

Decorate your jars

1. Use a small strip of double-stick tape to secure one end of the ric rac to a jar. The tape shouldn’t even show.

2. Wrap the ric rac around the jar.

3. Secure the other end of the ric rac with another strip of double-stick tape. Since ric rac has a bit of give, you’ll be able to line up your peaks and valleys to make a complete-looking circle.

4. Doilies are even easier: make a square out of double-stick tape on the back of the doily, then stick right onto the jar.

Now drop a candle into each jar, and light!

Or take them outside for an evening picnic, if the weather’s cooperating.

Happy spring!

What do you think? What would you use to decorate your jars: lace, ribbon, ric rac, doilies…? Are you a fan of all white, or would you go for a pop of color in there instead?
