Welcome to June’s edition of Green & Gorgeous. There’s a lot happening in the world of natural beauty and cosmetics – more than I can keep up with at the moment!
As consumers are becoming more savvy and aware of the potential health risks in many health and beauty products, the cosmetics industry is slowly undergoing a major shift toward truly safe and natural ingredients.
Today I just want to introduce you to a few sites that always have great tips and resources for non-toxic beauty. I am not affiliated in any way with of these sites; I simply like them, read them, and rely on them for the latest green beauty news.
My Favorite Natural Beauty Sites
• The Nature of Beauty Blog: unbiased product reviews, natural beauty news, and a very cool feature called “Nature of Beauty Live”, a series of “talkcasts” featuring interviews with experts in the green cosmetics industry, and a chance for listeners to ask questions via text and phone. Listen to past episodes online.
• Organic Beauty Source: tips, trends, and reviews from the world of green beauty, including brand recommendations.
• Beauty Truth: hard facts about the beauty industry from a celebrity make-up artist with over 20 years in the business. Skin care, beauty tips, and info about how skin works and what it needs to be healthy.
• The EcoDiva: in addition to cosmetics, the EcoDiva discusses all aspects of green style, including perfumes, fashion and accessories, and more. Frequent reviews and interviews with experts in the industry.

I haven’t checked out out these sites yet but have a general question and am hoping you and your readers might be able to help. My 14 year old son has some acne and we’re looking for something to use to clear it up. We have tried over the counter (not natural) products and these didn’t help – one even started bleaching his brown skin and our washcloths! At the same time, I am nearing fourty and am now getting some adult acne which I’ve never had in my life. We are both using some beautiful soap from Lusa Organics and like it but we need some further help. Anyone out there who has been through this and knows a non-toxic method of dealing with acne???
Hi Kika,
Calendula is very healing to acne. Acne typically has to do with your nutrition, as well as the products on your skin. I’m a Mary Kay Consultant turned organic, now representing Miessence. Feel free to e-mail me at michelle at traditionalsimplicity dot come. I’d be more than happy to try to help. There are a lot of different, more eco friendly things you can try. Like Fig +Sage mentioned – hormones can play into it as well. Their are herbal remedies you can use to help balance your and your son’s hormones. Vitex (Chaste Tree Berry) is one of those herbs that I saw many people have success with when working at a health food store.
Hi Katie,
Thank you so much for including TheEcoDiva on your list.
Best,
Elena
Hi Kika,
I recommend you look into Dr. Alkaitis Organic Skin Food, Intelligent Nutrients certified organic skin care or Marie Veronique Organics (Acne-Relief line). These are all high powered & known to produce results. Dr. Alkaitis & MV Organics offer travel kits that you could purchase to try them out first if you’d like and retailers like Nature of Beauty and Spirit Beauty Lounge offer samples of Intelligent Nutrients (whereas IN does not). I recommend using an entire regimen from the same line together, but if its too expensive – go straight to the serums/facial oils. Don’t be afraid to use them even on oily skin – they are amazing and I think you will be very pleasantly surprised in a short amount of time!
Its good to also be aware that food and hormones are usually the culprits of acne. Make sure the diet is also clean while using these products – because the skin is a reflection of what’s happening inside
Good luck to you on your quest!!

Thank you SO much! I was distraught to learn of the toxic aspects of cosmetics, but wasn’t sure where to turn. This will help!

I have subscribed to this Organic website/blog. I love all the great tips. I was just on here the other day and I saw a homemade recipe for toothpaste. Now, I can’t seem to find it. Can anyone send me a homemade recipe. I would like to make it this weekend.. Thanks…
