Just Making Ice Cream eBook {Review & Giveaway}

If there’s one indulgence I love, it’s ice cream, especially homemade ice cream. The more I make it, the less I find myself wanting to waste my time on conventional, store-bought versions. Homemade ice cream is just so creamy and delicious and fresh, and I love the virtually endless flavor combinations that can be created.

The only drawback to ice cream (in my book) is the sugar. Even homemade ice cream recipes usually call for white sugar. I’ve done a little experimenting with honey but other than that, I usually just use organic evaporated cane juice sugar, which is a slight improvement over using regular white sugar.

Today I am thrilled to introduce you to the perfect kitchen companion for any ice cream lovers who are also interested in real, nourishing foods: the Just Making Ice Cream eBook by Marillyn Beard. I’m so in love with this cookbook and hope to make almost every recipe in it eventually!

Read on for more information and how you can win a copy!

Ice Cream with Sugar Alternatives?

While I had previously (successfully!) made ice cream with honey, I had indeed never tried it with maple syrup or coconut palm sugar, which are among the ingredients that Marillyn suggests in her recipes. I was thoroughly impressed with the taste and the consistency of her ice creams and am now convinced that there are many ways to sweeten ice cream naturally!

Egg Yolks for Creaminess

Many of the ice creams I had made in the past were egg-free– I leaned towards these types because of their simplicity. But after reading about the health benefits of the egg yolks (see page 15) and reading through many of Marillyn’s recipes, I realized that custard-based ice creams don’t always take much longer to make, and I must say that these ice creams were so creamy and delicious!

I asked Marillyn about the safety of the recipes that include uncooked egg yolks (in some recipes the eggs are tempered in with the hot cream/milk, but in some they are just mixed in cold). She simply recommends that the eggs be “bought from a healthy source (free-ranged and grass-fed with minimal grain).”

She even told me that eating the egg yolks raw is even better “because that is where you get the full benefits. Like drinking raw milk… raw egg yolks are a superfood! It is rich in Biotin that has become the forgotten vitamin and a health tonic. It is also excellent for building healthy muscles… remember Rocky?!”

(I save old ice cream tubs to store homemade ice cream)

So far I’ve made the Maple Cinnamon Pecan, Honey Almond Dream, Pumpkin Spice, and Snickerdoodle ice cream flavors; all my family and friends that I’ve served them to have raved about these ice creams! I think my favorite so far was the Maple Cinnamon Pecan (it’s pictured in teh top photo). You might note that all of these flavors are particularly fall-ish. Just Making Ice Cream is full of treats for every season.

I also wanted to point out that I’m not affiliate of Marillyn’s eBook. While I did receive a copy of her book for review, I don’t gain anything if you buy it. I just love it so much that I think every ice-cream maker/lover should get a copy!

Each purchase of Just Making Ice Cream supports a great cause, Rancho Oasis for Youth, the youth ranch that Marillyn’s family founded in Central America.  Rancho Oasis is a ministry that joins with local youth and their families to teach them the proper care and use of animals, sustainable gardening techniques and other skills that will improve life, break the cycle of poverty and direct them to God.

    I’ve been making it with evaporated cane juice or demerara raw sugar, since I don’t buy white sugar anymore. I’m going to try soon with sucanat to see how that goes. I would love a copy of this book for all the different ideas! Thanks for the entry!!

    I am so happy to read about that are not reserved about trying the raw egg yolks in the ice cream! I used to have a recipe that called for it – and I thought that recipe was the best!!! Then one summer when I went to find my tried and true recipe – I couldn’t find it. To this day, I still don’t know what happened to it. I have looked for a replacement since then, but no one is willing to even talk about good free range, eggs and I have been disappointed alternative ones I have tried. I look forward to experimenting with Marilyn’s “Just Making Ice Cream” ebook. Thanks for sharing.
