Well, we’ve reached the end of Make Week. Some of you may be breathing a sigh of relief! I can’t wait to hear about your experience with less (or no!) TV-watching. And I can’t wait to hear how you filled your time instead. How did you make life happen this week? On Sunday, I’ll ask you to share your stories in the comments.
For our family, Make Week has been very similar to every other week – but with a few differences. We don’t have a TV in our home, but we do watch DVDs on the computer. We tend to put on a short show in the mornings for our daughter to watch – either first thing in the morning (if our daughter wakes up really early – which she does often) or while I’m in the shower.

I was nervous about getting through that time without Kipper or Curious George. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how little resistance I encountered. For the first time, our daughter played in her room while I showered, instead of watching a video. When she asked, I told her we’re taking a movie break right now. She asked once more, but I led her into her room and helped her find some other ways to amuse herself. Then I hopped into the shower – and that was that!
The rest of the week, she didn’t appear to miss watching movies. She spent more time in imaginative play, creating beach parties and picnics out of blankets on the floor, and rugs from mud in the backyard. Nothing miraculous or life-changing, but still, there was something different. We are going to try not to slip back into those habits, and instead reserve the movies for a more intentional experience.
As for me, well, I was too busy with Make Week to have time for much else! But I did make some crackers and granola bars, and I have grand plans to make freezer jam tomorrow morning. (I’ll let you know how that goes.) And we’re headed to the museum with friends on Sunday. But I’m keeping a copy of each PDF from this week to serve as inspiration for the future.
